Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) founded 1953 as Novosibirsk Institute of Electrical Engineering is one of the major research and educational centers of Russia, as well as one of the top technical universities. During the years of its existence, the university has trained more than 63, 000 specialists.
The university has experience training qualified specialists for
foreign countries. During the last 20 years more than 500 students have graduated from the
university. In the 70s and 80s students from East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria,
Cuba, Vietnam and Mongolia, countries of the so-called socialist community, studied here.
Nowadays, there are 13,500 students from Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)
and about 90 foreign students from China, Turkey, Mongolia, South Korea, India, Italy and Syria.
NSTU actively cooperates with foreign universities and has made 25 agreements for co-operation in scientific research, education and culture and also takes part in different programs of the European Union: Salzburg Seminar, Britain Council, DAAD, INTAS, TEMPUS, EDRUS-TACIS, TACIS. Through cooperation with the Harbin Institute of Technology, the University of Ulsan and the Turkish Educational Fund "UFUK" student exchange programs have been operating for several years.
A regional center for international cooperation in the educational field of engineering was founded in 1995. The center includes laboratories. The firms "Motorola", "Sun Microsystems', "Texas Instruments" and "Schneider" hold investments in it.
The university attracts teachers from others countries, especially for foreign language training (English, German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Turkish).
The material and technical base of the university ensures a high professional level of education and research activity of students. The center of Information Technologies provides the university with a local network of more than 600 computers. The network has more than 5 km of connections with access to the internet. A project for accessing information from the scientific library is underway. Since 1996 a data base is under development on the basis of FOLIO INFO BASE.
The university's vast library stock, amounting to 1,200 million volumes, is at the disposal of the students. There is a book supply, consisting of the newest books in English, received by the University within the framework of the program TACIS - "Economic Education". The printing house of NSTU publishes scientific transactions and monographs and is able to completely provide students with notebooks and school supplies.
A local committee of the international student organization "AIESEC" was established at NSTU in 1991. There is a student club and students of the University have their own newspaper.
Foreign students may have a rest at university sport camps on the shore of the Ob Sea or in the Altai Mountains. A sanatorium, medical clinic, swimming pool, ski center and sport complex are also at the students' disposal.
The university has an academic choir, the winner of various competitions, including an international competition in Prague (1990), and an ensemble of violinists widely known in Novosibirsk. Every year the culture center of the university organizes a big international party. Foreign students and teachers participate and have a chance to show their talent.
Foreign students have an opportunity to learn foreign languages at the language centers (Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, English, Dutch, French, Italian and German).
The eleven faculties of NSTU and 7 dormitories are housed on one campus. The public transport system is well-organized making it easy to get to any part of the city (the campus is near Metro station "Studencheskaya")
The training is conducted using a multilevel structure of education.
Structure of education

Tuition fee does not include accommodation and insurance expenses.
An academic year consists of 2 semesters and starts from the 1st of September. The second semester starts in February. Every semester finishes with an examination session, lasting 3 weeks.
Language preparation
The language of training at the university is Russian so foreign students have to learn Russian at the preparatory department for 1 year. Training is conducted in 3 areas: technical, economical and the Humanities. An area is chosen in accordance with the future training program.
Tuition fee: 1900 USD.
Admission Procedures:
In general, it is best to start applying in advance. If you have chosen one of the existing programs at the university, you can write directly to us to receive the application form and detailed requirements for admission. Deadline for applying is August 1.
Admittance to the University is on the basis of a contract. If you need a copy of the contract for getting a visa at the Russian Federation Embassy, please let us know. If you don't, the contract can be made upon arrival.
Registration Fee: 120 USD including consular fee, state duty for the invitation, etc. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation provides visa support in your country by this money. This sum you must send by Western Union to deputy director of Center for international education Tatiana I. Belova.
The student undertakes to submit to the University the following documents before starting education:
- personal application form
- medical certificate, certifying absence of medical contraindications for studying (including results of AIDS tests)
- International passport
- educational certificate certified by a notary
- medical insurance
- for post-graduate students the follow additional documents: a copy of the educational certificate at the level of Master of Science or of qualified specialist with a duly notarized English translation
- official transcript (or a list of studied subjects with marks), lists of scientific works, resume.
Housing and living conditions in Novosibirsk
The city is situated in the central part of Eurasia. The climate here is rather continental with cold winters and hot summers. The average winter temperature is from -22 C to -18 C. In summer it is +22 C. On those rare days when it is from +30 C to +35 C in the sun, the water temperature in the river Ob is often more than +22 C. In Novosibirsk there are many sunny days, averaging 2100 hours a year. The most attractive season here is spring and the beginning of summer with sunny weather and short warm rains, and also September, famous for its "Indian summer".
Living cost in Novosibirsk (meals, transport) is about 60 USD per month.
Foreign students may live in the university hostel or dormitory situated on the university campus.
Accommodation in hostel is blocks consisting of 2-person and 3-person rooms, toilet and bathroom. Price: about 190 USD per month (it s one block)
Accommodation in dormitory is blocks consisting of 2-person and 3- person rooms, toilet and washstand. The modern big shower-room and washing machines are located separately on the 1st floor.
Price: 15 USD per month.
Medical care:
Each international student enrolled in NSTU must have medical insurance. Students without insurance are issued insurance upon arrival and registration.
The insurance costs 185 USD (from September 1 till August 1) and includes all types of medical services.
